PROGRAMME

09:30 to 09:40 Welcome Speech Özlem Alev Demirel (MEP)

09:40 to 10:40 The Ukraine War and its impact on Turkish Foreign Policy

Participants: Prof. Dr. Ilhan Uzgel (expert on international relations), Yusuf Karadaş (daily newspaper Evrensel) and Stavri Kalopsidiotou (expert on international law). Moderation: Giorgos Georgiou MEP

The Ukraine war marks a turning point in international relations. In particular, however, it has a direct impact on the countries bordering the Black Sea and the Middle East. What impact will these developments have on the foreign policy of the Erdogan regime? Will Turkey take on a new role in the region as a NATO member? What position will it take as the Gulf states are currently repositioning themselves? Will this open up new options for resolving long-standing conflict issues or will it lead to new conflicts?

11:00 to 12:00 Turkish domestic politics and the new challenges

Dr. Mühdan Sağlam (energy policy expert), Hakkı Özdal (journalist and author) and Sevda Karaca (women’s magazine Ekmek ve Gül). Moderation: Miguel Urban Crespo MEP

Turkey’s domestic politics are facing new challenges: Will there be a regime change at all? If so, will this regime change only end with a restoration of the old parliamentary system or will it lead to an expansion of democratic rights and freedoms? The energy issue is increasingly at the centre of EU-Turkey relations. Is the EU’s Green Deal compatible with Turkish energy policy? Who will benefit from it? Turkey’s women’s movement is one of the cornerstones of the country’s democratic opposition. Turkey’s withdrawal from the Istanbul Convention was a major setback, will the women’s movement be able to win back its gains?
